The Benefits of Past Life Regression Therapy
The goal of Past Life Therapy is to heal samskaras and imprints. Our past life selves live within us as sub-personalities—shaping our feelings, talents, fears, and behaviors—often without our conscious awareness. The most problematic past lives are those with unresolved trauma or unfinished business. PLT brings these inner characters into consciousness to resolve and heal their complexes, allowing us to understand why certain things happened and by whom.
Typically, a session focuses on one past life story. However, similar themes often connect multiple past lives, and these may emerge together. We will choose the one with the most charge.
For instance, a theme of despair might appear in different scenarios across lifetimes—being a slave, feeling trapped in a loveless marriage, or struggling as an artist. Each story reflects the same core theme but in different contexts.
The wounded feminine is a common theme amongst people who are women today; bringing forward the contracts to heal past wounds to the body, expressed as childhood sexual abuse, rape, interrupted childbirth, stolen children and forced marriages for political or property reasons.
Core themes can be revealed through repeating patterns of behavior and by noticing phrases we habitually use, like “I always…” or “I never…”. Casual comments like “I'm never enough” or “I never have enough time” often carry past life echoes. These persistent themes shape our reality but can be healed and transformed through this past life process.
Part One:
The first stage of PLT involves recalling past life memories. Here are some common methods:
Reliving the Past Life Because we find imprints and samskaras at the heart of our core themes, the emotions and thoughts of the past life character must be explored in depth to reveal what is being carried from a past timeline to this present timeline.
In this form of regression therapy, Deep Memory Process it is essential to relive the past life as fully as possible during the session: we begin in the body.
First, experiencing trauma catalyzes a reaction of freezing and dissociation in the sympathetic nervous system.
Second, one needs to uncover the depth of the past life characters experience to actually heal it. Regarding the first point, reliving the past life helps in the ‘unfreezing process.’ In essence, unfreezing wakes up that soul fragment that may still be stuck or split off from the whole psyche. Reliving acts as a way to revive this ‘suspended and sleeping’ aspect of the soul. Recalling a past life story from the perspective of an observer, instead of being fully in the story suggests that a dissociated part of the psyche is having the memory. A dissociated memory is not an accurate account because, that part of the psyche split off as soon as things got difficult. In present life traumatic recall, people often report watching themselves from ‘above’ or ‘off to the side’ while the traumatic event is happening. The dissociated part of the psyche can remember the details through observation from the sidelines, but the memory will often not include the emotions, thoughts, and imprints that were present in the body, where the actual event was taking place, simply because that part was not present while the trauma was happening.
The second point follows the first one closely. As a therapist in past life work, it is essential to know the inner life of the past life self to affect change and healing.
Part Three: Death and the Return Home
Every past life ends in passing through the death, marking a crucial transition for the soul. In Past Life Therapy, this is where deep healing begins—completing unfinished business.
Consciousness survives death, of course, so we follow it through the death process and return to the afterlife.
Deep Memory Process work in this area draws loosely on Tibetan Buddhist teachings about the Bardos, transitional states after death and before reincarnation.
Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) give glimpses of this process—brief encounters with light and loved ones—yet they are often incomplete, like a look-see rather than a permanent transition.
Trauma can fragment the psyche, causing parts of the soul to remain stuck in the lower Bardos. These fragments become earthbound, replaying their final thoughts and unresolved emotions—like “I can’t leave them”—fixating attention on the earth plane.
Shamanic traditions call these split-off parts “soul fragments.” Such stuck energy is not the whole soul but a replaying loop of unhealed pain.
Buddhist and Hindu teachings emphasize the importance of dying well—letting go of attachments and purifying the mind to ease the soul’s journey beyond. Lifelong spiritual practice, they say, prepares one to navigate the Bardos at death.
In PLT, many people do not perceive the light after death; they remain caught in their dying emotions and obsessions. That’s why it’s vital to bring these final states of mind into consciousness in therapy—to liberate the stuck soul fragments.
Healing in the Bardos can involve catharsis, resolving emotional imprints, reconciling with loved ones, forgiving perpetrators, or sending other past life characters to healing states or finding justice. These processes help these soul parts release attachments and ascend to higher planes, freeing them to re-integrate with the larger soul’s journey.
Part Four: Overview, Integration and Reflection
Once the stuck energy in the lower Bardos is resolved, consciousness feels lighter and can spontaneously ascend to the higher Bardos—realms of pure light, unconditional love, and grace. Here, wise beings and divine images often appear, and communication flows intuitively beyond words. In this realm, an overview of the past life emerges naturally, revealing connections to current life relationships, the broader patterns of past lives, and their deeper purpose. New directions and potentials for the present life are often pointed out by these higher beings.
When the client is gently brought back to everyday awareness, we review how these experiences relate to their current life. New insights often continue to unfold in the hours and days that follow, with realizations falling into place like a series of dominos.
These regression stages reveal much about the soul’s psychology: even though a lifetime may have been long ago, its patterns can shape our current life. The present moment ties the past and future together. By resolving limitations from the past, we gain freedom in the present—and open up new possibilities for the future.
